The cockroach has been a common pejorative used to describe Mexican immigrants. The media has been creating stereotypical images of alien immigrants who seemingly threaten the purity of this great nation. These images are created by very wealthy people with extensive interlocking networks of power, people who often have no experience with border culture or recent immigrants. Additionally, these images are absorbed and reproduced by working class and middle class Americans. The fantasy of immigrant invaders who have come to take our jobs, absorb our health care, spread crime and raise our taxes occurs within the level of the imaginary. We felt it was necessary to confront this situation through the creation of a fake public health announcement and a short “government sponsored” video.
