Bleak & Bleaker 1
by Calla Thompson
2007, 50 seconds
‘The homeland’ now seems almost inextricably bound with ideas of security and, in turn, authority. Within the realm of country, what is available and to whom can be observed. In my work, I examine the ways that power is enacted. I do not explore totalitarian power or repressive regimes. Instead, I examine small actions that beget small amounts of power, scrutinizing gains and losses. Always unresolved, my scenes suggest both the physical and psychological struggles of my characters. In the video Bleak and Bleaker I, a covering of wooden armor blinds a character on all fours. This character is still, while behind a trophy teeters back and forth before disappearing.
