Living Legacy: 60 Years of the Watkins Collection This exhibition traces the history of the collection from its founding in 1945 to the present. The Watkins Collection was created as a memorial to C. Law Watkins founder of the modern art department at AU. Over the years the collection has grown from 25 original donations to over 4500 artworks today. Featured artists will include Milton Avery, Arthur Dove, Jack Tworkov, Sam Gilliam, Jacob Kainen, Alma Thomas, Gene Davis, Ken Noland and many others.
William Allan: Stories and Watercolors features stories about fishing and gorgeous watercolors of salmon, trout, and other fish by this legendary San Francisco artist.

After Bruce Conner offers the first extensive showing of inkblot drawings by internationally-know Beat-generation artist Bruce Conner, and the anonymous artists he has personally trained to carry on his work. Related exhibition programming October 29 Curator’s talk : A First Look: David Bates, Gene Davis, Nancy Graves, and Master Drawings from the Katzen Collection 4 p.m. , American University Museum at the Katzen Director and curator Jack Rasmussen probes the scope and origins of this highlight exhibition representing the passions of the Katzen Arts Center’s founding benefactors, Cyrus and Myrtle Katzen. November 5 Artist’s talk : William Allan 4 p.m. , American University Museum at the Katzen Allan, a northern California-based artist with an international following, discusses his verbal and painterly evocations of fishing, art and life represented in his current exhibition, “Stories and Watercolors.” November 10 Screening : Bruce Conner Film Festival 7 – 9 p.m. , Katzen Arts Center, Abramson Family Recital Hall From 10-second explosion in the camera to a distressing, 40-minute rumination on the atom bomb, Bruce Conner’s experimental shorts of the 1950s and ‘60s are unlike any others before or since. Highly prized by contemporary artists and filmmakers alike, their found footage and overlays of music and sound are audio-visual analogs to the disorder and discontent of the Beat Era. Conner’s films have not been seen in Washington since a Hirshhorn Museum screening several years ago. November 12 Curator’s talk : Living Legacy: 60 Years of the Watkins Collection 4 p.m. , American University Museum at the Katzen Jonathan Bucci, Curator of Collections, discusses how the Watkins Collection has reflected, since 1945, American University’s identity as a magnet for studio artists and teachers, and more recently, collectors who wish to ensure a place for Washington, DC in America’s art history lexicon. |
