Juror: Chan Chao

Burmese-born artist Chan Chao studied with John Gossage at the University of Maryland. Chao’s most recent project is “Echo,” a series of female nude portraits, published by Nazraeli Press. His earlier work “Burma: Something Went Wrong” and “Letter to PLF” documented the struggles of freedom fighters in Burma.

His project “Burma: Something Went Wrong,” was included in the 2002 Whitney Biennial. His photographs are in the collections of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, L.A. County Museum of Art, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, The Whitney Museum of American Art, and other public collections.

Chao participated in Light Work’s Artist-in-Residence program. He has received grants from the Open Society Institute, JGS Inc., and the DC Commission on Arts and the Humanities. He is represented by Yancey Richardson Gallery in New York, Numark Gallery in Washington, DC and he has an upcoming show at Mark More Gallery in Los Angeles.

Chan Chao currently lives and works in Washington, DC with his wife Jenny Cohan.
