About Us

SPEMA is the Mid Atlantic region of the Society for Photographic Education. SPE is a non-profit membership organization that provides a forum for the discussion of photography-related media as a means of creative expression and cultural insight.

Through its interdisciplinary programs, services and publications, the society seeks to promote a broader understanding of the medium in all its forms, and to foster the development of its practice, teaching, scholarship and criticism.

As a region, we award yearly scholarships for undergrads, grads and adjuncts to attend the regional conference. We also host a student exhibition.

Our yearly conference focuses on a timely theme, presenting contemporay artists’ work, as well as panels on issues surrounding photography and its role within the larger context of the art world/market. The conference encourages valuable networking for both students and professionals. Through portfolio reviews with graduate school reviewers, gallery directors, curators and publishers, attendees receive valuable feedback on their work as well as exhibition and publication opportunities.
